Together

I think one of the hardest things about being a women is the lie that you must have everything together. I mean who really does? None of us. That's who. My friend and neighbor sent me a great blog post about how we women compare ourselves to everyone. I have to admit, I get tired of evaluating myself and making sure I compare with other women.

I think there is some (false) idea that stay-at-home moms have everything put together. This stereotype made (ok, makes) me feel inadequate sometimes. While I wish my floors were always clean, the laundry was always folded and my husband came home to a brand-new recipe every night, that does.not.happen. We pick up balls of dog hair off the floor, we wear clothes out of the (clean!) basket, and we eat a hot, homemade supper most nights. Praise Jesus for frozen pizza.

I think most mommas, SAH or Working, have days like mine. You rush to get ready, hit the door running, trying not to look like a chicken with it's head cut off as you rush through the grocery with your tired baby, only to notice when you get home that you have dried breastmilk rings on your shirt and baby food in your hair. I have learned to LOVE things like that. I wear them as a badge of honor because it means I'm somebody's momma. And you know that every other momma you passed at Wal-Mart didn't even notice your pureed-peas-breastmilk mess because she's too worried about getting the peas out of her own hair!

For you mommas who need a reminder that even those of us who look like we have it together DON'T always (and so it's written down lest I forget about it and miss out on the opportunity to embarrass my sweet boy with this story later in life) here is a story to put your mind at ease.

We were celebrating Dane's great uncle's induction into a local Hall of Honor. As a SAHM who wears yoga pants and houseshoes most days, I relish the opportunity to get dressed up and go out. So I put on a cute satin dress with tights and zip up my riding boots. I even through on a cute little coat, because nursing mommas need layers. Dane slept through the reception before the ceremony and was wide awake when everyone took their seats in the auditorium. Apparently severe constipation is par for the course when introducing solids, so when The Boy is finally going, you pretty much know it.

I jumped up from my seat and grab the diaper bag. As we hit the back doors of the auditorium he spits up all over himself and me... I hurry to the bathroom  and grab some paper towels to get us cleaned up. He's now crying because going #2 when you haven't been in days in apparently pretty painful. I forgot to mention we're in a high school auditorum so, of course, there are no diaper changing stations in the bathroom. Ugh. Right out side the bathroom is a bench underneath a window. Beggars can't be choosers, right? Out comes to trusty changing pad and I lay my screaming baby down to change him. I get him cleaned up and slip a new diaper underneath him... but he is not done. There.is.more.poop. So I sit and wait...and wait, as he continues crying, trying to let him finish while digging around for more wipes and another diaper. I probably resembled Mary Poppins pulling everything out of that stupid bag looking for one freakin' diaper. It has to be there, right?! I brought more than one! Please, mommas, tell me this sounds familiar. When you have a little boy, you must hold the diaper in place while he finishes his business because if you let it go to say, search frantically through your bag for another diaper, he will decide he needs to pee, too, and shower the window with urine. Oy. That poor school janitor.

Thankfully by this time my mother-in-law heard me Dane crying and came to the rescue. If we're being truthful she sat and laughed hysterically while trying to soothe the baby. I guess that's payback for the time a momma cow bucked her into the bed of the four-wheeler instead of offering aid I laughed until I cried. Sorry, Dana. :) Ya'll, I'm just saying that that much poop should not come out of a tiny baby. Finally the eruption stopped, we cleaned up the window and I found a clean diaper. We decided to sit in the lobby for the remainder of the ceremony.

There I sat holding a traumatized baby in a pee-soaked, puke-covered onesie (the ONE time I forget a change of clothes!) looking down at the puke on my pretty satin dress and the run in my tights from the zipper on my boots. I learned a few things that day. 1) Nursing mommas should never wear satin, 2) zippers will pull your tights 3) don't try to act like you've got it all together because your baby will make a fool of you, and 4) God has a sense of humor.

There you have it, sweet friends. We all look "together" until you get close enough to smell the spit up. :)

photo op

Just to take a minute to brag on myself: This morning I SINGLE-HANDEDLY  curled my hair, put on make-up and maneuvered a cart through the aisles of Wal-Mart. Doing that by myself is not praise-worthing, but when you literally do it with a single hand because you're holding a baby in the other one, well that makes this momma a little prideful! Likes I'm finally figuring this out!

My generous parents have loaned me their super amazing Canon and I love finding any excuse to take pictures of our sweet boy. The other day we did a "shoot" to get some memorable snapshots of what he was like at 6months old. Now, if I could just take a crash course in Photoshop...

he looks JUST like his daddy's baby photos here. :)

over it, momma!

okay. i'll give you one more, but then we're finished!

cautiously trying a baby rice cake.

Perry Dane,

You are the most amazing thing that's ever happened to us! Last night, your daddy picked you up out of your bed so he could snuggle you just a little longer, and don't you know that melts your momma's heart!

You can sit up on your own for a few minutes and you reach for everything within a mile of you. You babble and coo and even squeal with excitement sometimes. You love bananas, peaches, pears, and sweet potatoes. You could live without peas and mango! Every day with you is a new adventure.

We're still waiting for you to rollover! Your doctor says you're very strong and told us to baby-proof the house because you'll be crawling soon! You enjoy playing in your exersaucer and pretty much refuse to lay down and play anymore- you want to sit up and see the world.

I pray for you every single day. I pray you will love God's people and keep His word in your heart. You're going to do amazing things for the kingdom, my sweet boy. It's a blessing watching you grow!

We love you to the moon... and back!
Momma and Daddy

on motherhood

Today our little house goes on the market.

I don't even know where to start except to say that God moving so much around me and in me right now that I just feel like I have to write to make sense of it all. I feel so abundantly blessed right now it's not even right. Since we jumped out on faith and made the decision for me to stay home with Dane, I feel as though I've been riding this roller coaster of crazy emotions.

Looking back on Dane's first few weeks of life, if I had gone to the doctor he probably would have diagnosed me with postpartum depression or anxiety. Then again, I've never had a very sound-mind to begin with, so maybe that was just me getting over postpartum hormones! I still have days when this SAHM thing is HARD. Hard doesn't even begin to cover it. When your baby nurses 12+ times a day and you're up with him all night too, any woman could easily find herself on the threshold of the loonybin. It was, and is, during those times, times of weak-sleep-deprived-clouded thinking, that satan would convince me I had made the biggest mistake of my life. "You gave up a career and a good income to just stay at home?" After all, how many times do I, or other SAHMs, hear that? "So are you working or just staying home with the baby?" Just? Try it for one day, my friend. You will begin asking, as my amazingly kind and very in-tune former boss does, "Do you work outside the home?"

I have found so much comfort in God's word in the last few months, probably now more than ever before. I am comforted by passages that remind me not to store up treasures on earth, that this world is not my home, and that I was called to go and make disciples. Not that you can't do all of those things as a working momma, however for me, they are reminders that I am doing what I am called to do for this season of my life. He reminds me that He is all I need, and that my greatest job right now is making a disciple out of the little prince who is currently sound asleep in my arms. So, on the hard days, I claim those promises in Jesus' name.

A loop on this roller coaster of emotions that is parenthood that I have still not mastered is fear. If I was fearful before Dane...well... then I just don't even know the word to describe what I feel now. To be fearful and struggle with control is enough when you're praying to release false-control over your own life, but when you have been given the most-precious gift that is a baby boy... I don't know how I'm ever going to let this go. If he sleeps in our bed his whole life and never goes to school or college that would be okay with me... okay, so I'm kidding, kind of. Seriously! Watching the most precious part of my existence learn about life and all of the pains, heartaches and frustrations that come with it is not going to be easy. Lord, I'm praying now! I prayed Hannah's prayer from 1Sam that God would give me a son who I would then give to him. And I meant every word of that prayer. Every last one. Every time I prayed it. Even the meaning of his name showed us that God has a most beautiful plan for how He's going to use our son to change the world. As his momma though, while it fills my eyes with tears of joy to think about how my boy is going to bless God's kingdom, it scares me to death to think about one day kissing his sweet face goodbye as he hits the mission field for the first time. Why I am thinking about this now? I've got 80 years before we send him off. Ha! :)

I say all that rambling nonsense to say that I am amazed at how God continues putting together all of the details of our life into this most beautiful story. While there are some days when I want to throw my hands up in the air and say, "REALLY?! Really, this was an important detail to add to our story?" I feel Him smile and say, "Oh, just wait, my daughter. What you see as stumbling blocks, I see as periods at the end of a perfect sentence that I, not you my dear, am writing." I'm thankful for a God who is able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine.

Oops

While I'm thankful for getting an iPad for Christmas, right now I'm so mad at the stupid thing and my blogger app I could scream. Yesterday when updating some posts and adding labels to them, the text of each post was deleted. I don't ever save anything as a Word document (but will from now on!) so my last few posts are gone in the great abyss that is the world wide web. Im hoping I have one devoted reader who may have copied my recent entries to save for themselves....nah? A girl can dream, right? From now on, I'm back to blogging on my trusty old laptop. Darn you, Apple, and your stupid products that are taking over the world!
